How Spiderman's Character Arc will Progress in the next two Spiderman Movies

With Spiderman featuring in 4 MCU movies till date and his second solo outing being just more than a month away, I am trying to look at how the character arc of Spiderman has moved up until now and also trying to predict how the character arc will proceed in the next two movies.

Spiderman was introduced into the MCU with Captain America: Civil War where he had a small role and then he got his own solo movie, Spiderman: Homecoming. This was follwed by team up movies, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. The Spiderman introduced in these movies was young and very eager to do something good by using his abilities. He also saw Iron Man as his mentor and always wanted to impress him. But now with Iron Man gone at the end of Avengers: Endgame, how is his story arc going to move forward? Here I have tried to present my view of how his character arc moves forward.

We know from the trailers of Spiderman: Far From Home that Nick Fury is going to introduce Mysterio to Spiderman and from the looks of it, Spiderman who has just lost his mentor will start looking upto Mysterio as his new mentor. But anyone who has knowledge of the comics world will know that Mysterio is a major Spiderman villain. So there is no doubt in my mind that Mysterio will be the real villain in Far From Home. And with that reveal, Spiderman would have lost his second mentor and by the end of the movie would be having difficulty with trusting other superheros and teaming up with them. This would act as the main character theme for Spiderman in his last solo movie, which is yet to be announced. 

In the final Spiderman movie, Peter Parker will have to come to terms with trusting other superheros and he may also become a mentor to some younger superhero. Now this is a possibility because we have been hearing news of a movie about young Avengers. There is no confirmation of it, but no one has denied it yet. 

Thus this is how Spiderman's character arc moves in MCU. First he has a mentor. Then he loses his mentor. Soon after he looks upto another mentor who betrays him. He loses trust with others and does not believe in team ups. Then a younger superhero restores faith in other superheros and he becomes a mentor. This would be a fitting character arc for Peter Parker. 

Now this is what I feel can be the Spiderman's character arc in the next two movies. I may turn out to be completely wrong once Far From Home releases in a little more than a month. Or maybe I am right.

The Wandering Earth Review

The Wandering Earth is a Chinese sci-fi movie which is currently the second highest grossing movie of all time in the country. Netflix purchased the streaming rights of the movie and dropped the movie onto its streaming service and that's when I could see the movie.

First to clear out a few things from the perspective of an Indian movie viewer. Even China can produce such humongous space adventure movies like their Hollywood counterparts, so why can't India do so. Someone should put their thinking hats on to make such a movie. It's high time someone in India makes a space adventure. Now getting down to reviewing the movie.

The movie is based in the future where the Sun is dying and will expand and engulf all planets of the Solar System. To escape from this, Earth's major countries get together and come up with the Wandering Earth project. The plan is to propel Earth out of its orbit and move it to a star 4.2 light years away where it would begin a new life in a new solar system. However the journey is not easy and whether the people of earth succeed is the story. Based on a novel of the same name, the movie has been well written and has some really engaging scenes which give you goosebumps and a feeling of exhileration. Thus the makers have done a tremendous job at making a movie which is the audience can relate to by creating characters who seem normal like us but are faced with huge decisions. The movie is a fast paced ride but has elements similar to other movies like Armageddon and 2001: A Space Odyssey. Thus it does not feel entirely new to watch. One of the best aspects of the movie is its visual effects and use of CGI to create the effect propelling Earth out of its orbit will create. The movie is over 2 hour long. However when I watched it, it didn't feel like 2 hours due to its fast pace and crisp editing. The movie moves from one situation to the next at fast pace and thus keeps the audience engaged throughout the length of the movie.

In these kinds of movies, acting usually takes a back seat as the actors have to carry out a lot of stunts and fast paced sequences. Thus the movie lacks some good acting. However the actors have done a decent job and the acting does not look bad.

The director, Frant Gwo, has directed a sci-fi adventure of this scale for the first time, and by the looks of it, has done a remarkable job. He has beautifully created the ups and downs in the movie and was able to give me goosebumps, which is by no means a small feat. Thus I must say, Well Done.

Overall, this is a movie to be watched by all sci-fi fans who watched and enjoyed Armageddon and other similar movies. Do not expect much stimulation for your brain cells though. So go and watch this massive movie from Asia, which can give competition to Hollywood.

Avengers: Endgame Review (Spoiler Free)

Needless to say, Avengers: Endgame was the most anticipated movie of all time, right at the top, together with Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Avengers: Infinity War. And as predicted by many has broken numerous records at the box office and will continue to do so till the end of its run. I have tried my best to review this movie without giving out any spoilers. And I must say it is really difficult.

Avengers: Infinity War was one of the movies with the fastest pace in the MCU with no breathing space between the scenes. On the other hand Endgame starts off slowly by focusing on the aftermath of the decimation and how the different characters have been affected by it. However once the events start to unfold, the movie keeps  picking up pace  from one scene to another till the climax. While the movie is enjoyable, some parts could have been shortened to increase the pace. However those are also the parts that lend some soul to the movie. Thus it would have been difficult for the directors to edit out those parts. After the mammoth scale of Avengers: Infinity War, it was always going to be difficult to bring a story which matched it in scale. However since both of them were written together, not only has the scale been matched, but it has been surpassed. The only drawback that I can see is that the ending is not so good as that of Infinity War as it does not bring out a similar range of emotions. However considering that this is the end of the franchise, the ending is apt. There were a lot of fan theories doing the rounds and some turn out to be true while a lot don't. However, as far as my knowledge goes, no one expected the story to go this way, and thus the Russo Brothers have outdone all the fans and made a memorable movie. The movie has spectacular levels of VFx and CGI not seen before in MCU movies. Even the last action scene, which can be compared to Aquaman's last action sequence in scale, is presented in a way that is way better than the sequence of the DC movie.

Acting wise, all the actors have played their role in the same vein that they have done in their past movies, which is a testament to their consistency and talent. One can however argue that they did not get a chance to do anything different. Only Chris Hemsworth has some additional shades and gets to play his part like we have not seen in the past movies.

All the credit here needs to go to the Russo brothers for directing this epic and making it work. The way they directed and presented the two Avenger movies is nothing less than spectacular. Now I do not think they will be on board to direct another movie of this scale, as achieving this level of near perfection is not possible each time, which we have seen with other good directors.

Overall the movie is for every Marvel and MCU fan who was waiting for this for the last one year. So go ahead and watch this, if you haven't done it already. It is worth every penny of your money.
